World War III Inside My PC

World War III Inside My PC
By Amanda Hamm

I have to say that all of the years of working from home that I was stubborn and never took the advice of backing up files, having the latest updates for your virus protection, and running at least one full scan per week was the biggest mistake I had ever made. About a week ago my computer began running extremely slow, programs would not open properly, I got repeated error messages, my browsers would not work and working was made virtually impossible. I knew instantly that something major was wrong and began searching for answers. While in a conversation with a good friend of mine, Tammy Munson, she said that it sounded like a virus. So my hunt for the intruders began!

Over the last three days I have spent clearing my computer of viruses, trojan horses, worms, and whatever miscellaneous build up that it has filled with. I had a simple virus protector that was already installed on my computer. It was one of those 30 day trials from Norton. It located two potential threats and quarantined them and I thought my problem was over. However that was not the case and the original problems persisted.

I ran to the local Wal-Mart and picked up McAfee s VirusScan Plus edition for a little less then twenty five dollars. A great buy for anyone who is on a budget or so I thought. I came home anticipating that after one or two scans that my issues would be relieved and the war would be over. I ran a full internal scan which found 28 viruses/threats. I was in awe at how I had managed to accumulate so many intruders, but I was in more disbelief that McAfee would only allow me to remove 3 of them and allowed the other 25 vicious things to remain.

As a final attempt to win this war I stopped over to download AVG Free Advisor, did a complete scan and what do you know all 25 previous viruses that McAfee left behind and 4 more popped up. AVG allowed me to remove them with a click or two and instantly I was able to open a browser. I quickly restarted my computer and to my disbelief everything was back to normal.

So now that I am virus free and I along with AVG (my commander and chief) have conquered those pests called viruses, I am taking that advice that some wise man before me laid out, I leave you with this.

“Protect your computer, files, and clients with a routine anti – virus scan.”
