Clean the case. Or in the case of a laptop, close the lid and wipe the exterior
Clean the mouse or touchpad. Open the mouse, take out the ball and wipe it.
Keep a neat keyboard. Use some compressed air to blow debris out from between the keys.
Wipe CDs and DVDs with a soft moistened cloth. Start from the center of the disk and move toward the edge.
Run a registry cleaner. Installing and uninstalling software leaves orphaned entries in the Windows Registry. I recommend Registry Mechanic from PCTools.com.
Keep your PC away from cigarette smoke.Smoke can cause damage to circuits and other delicate components.

If you do all these things to your computer at least once a week or once every two weeks your computer should not give you any major problems. Preventative maintenance is key in using any PC. I know that it might be difficult at first but as with any new habit it just takes time.
Of all these steps running a system wide backup is the most important especially if you run a business. Ideally a backup that is remote in the event of a fire or other major disaster. Having a backup online is easy and secure but it does not mean you should not backup an important file on a thumb drive, for example.
Having a working computer is important, so take the time to perform some maintenance, you won t be sorry and it will get easier and less time consuming the more you do it. Schedule it in your calendar like anything else you need to get done and just do it.
