CDs have become one of the most important mediums to store information on. They have been widely accepted by the music fraternity as an efficient and convenient mode to distribute music on. CD replication is a process, which primarily involves copying information from a master disk to make multiple copies of it. It is a complicated process but has been made simple with the advent of fully automated replication machines. CD replication can be summarized as a process of reproduction of media such as music CDs, data CDs or video CDs by manufacturing them. The process makes use of expensive equipment, which is used mainly for the production of large quantities of music CDs.

The duplication process is a simple one, which does not involve the expensive equipment required in replication. Duplication is a process that can be done with the help of a master copy of the music CD, a computer and blank storage medium. The music CD replication process on the other hand is a process, which uses a glass master, on which the information is stored. This glass master is in turn used to make “stampers” that are further required to make a molding of the information on the CD foil. The foil is protected by layers of polycarbonate plastic and polished to make it look glossy. This is the last step in the manufacturing process. Once done it is screened and tested for quality control and finally packed for distribution.
As the entire process is automated, the cost per unit of music CD replication is low. It was thought that the replication companies entertained only large orders. However, they have now begun to work with small companies who require 50 to 100 CDs replicated.
