IT Management Strategy – Specific Policy and Procedural Issues
By Cinoy Ravindran
The specific issues that the management strategy for IT should address are briefly discussed below:
Technology selection, Acquisition and Installation
An organization should have a clear policy laid down regarding criteria and procedures to be followed while selecting technology. The policy also should spell out individual roles or departments authorized to select a particular technology.
Policies have to be laid down for purchasing, acquiring and installing technology. This issue concerns vendor management. It includes policies and criteria for selecting a vendor, setting terms and conditions and tracking his performance for future use.
A very important aspect of the technology policy is the determination of technology standards for the organization. To decide on these, the IT strategy has to take proper note of both the current and future requirement of the company.
Recruitment, Training and Allocation of IT Personals
Successful management of information technology requires quality personnel. Such personnel have to be selected, recruited and retained with the organization. It is critically important to train them properly to discharge their duties effectively within the organization.
Proper training also often serves as an important source of motivation for these personnel. It is also very important to assign the right type of jobs to these people.
For this purpose, policies for proper performance and potential appraisal of these people are needed. In fact, the training need analysis can also be an important outcome of an effective procedure.
Training and Support to End Users
End users have to be trained and educated in using different technologies so that they start using the technology in an efficient manner without wasting their valuable time. They have to be supported through out their use of the technology so that they do not encounter too many stumbling blocks in their use of technology. The right type of personnel has to be appointed for training, supporting and in general interacting with the end user.
Policies should be developed for training users in using hardware and software properly, developing their own application, maintaining proper documentation, managing their own data properly, taking backup etc.
All these IT management policies and procedures are used for monitoring the effectiveness of management of the IT based environment.
