If your memory is anything like mine, you need a cheat sheet when you play Guild Wars to keep track of all the weapons and what they can do. Here s a quick guide. Keep in mind that although any weapon may be used by any class, the skills associated with each weapon are only available to specific professions.
The three main types of close range fighting weapons are the Axe, Hammer and Sword.
An ax has a large spread between minimum and maximum values. It has a higher base damage than a sword, but because of its large value spread, it can inflict less damage. The ax and sword have a similar skill set. The sword wields consistent damage whereas with the ax, there may be big damage.
Hammers are all about inflicting big damage. They have the highest maximum damage output, but are the slowest of the three weapons. They are two-handed weapons so characters using them are unable to use a shield for protection or a focus for more energy. The hammer is useful for attacks that focus on knockdowns and weakening the foes.
Swords wield the most average damage because of their close ranges that appear on their minimum-maximum damage. Swords have the lowest output with regard to their maximum base damage. They possess a fast base attack speed.
The bow is used for long range fighting and is a two-handed weapon. As with any two handed weapon, the character is unable to use a shield or focus. Bows can be long range and slow attacking, as in the Longbow and Flatbow while others have a short range but a faster attack speed, as in the Shortbow and Hornbow.
Long range bows are able to inflict damage without putting the character in harm s way. Short range bows are more dangerous for the character because they need to be closer to the enemy, but the advantage is that it takes less time to fire, therefore less time to hit the enemy which results in better accuracy. There s a trade-off.
