That Embedded Product - Did You See It?

Displays. Screens. They shine at us and brightly shout at us from just about every contraption we touch or see as we travel through our day. The hyperactive super-sized displays on Times Square are an obvious example of our century s obsession with bombarding the senses. We are indeed an audio-visual society with a voracious appetite!

We interact regularly with displays, buttons, and touch-screens without even thinking about it. They are a necessary and integral part of most every electronic device on the market today, from your cell phone to your car, to the cockpit of the plane that whisks you away on vacation. The human wants the machine to do something, and they must communicate. And somehow, they do. “But,” you ask, “who knows how to build this stuff?”

Only a relatively small cross-section of our society become the people that are the brains and brawn of the industry that understands the “how” of making such an electronic product, a “device,” work. The people that crank out these electronic goodies call their industry the “Embedded Product” industry. A funny name? Well, consider this. Each of these wonderful man-made marvels contains one, or many, microprocessors. You don t see them, and therefore you just don t think about them! For example, you probably do not call your cell phone a computer, but inside that sleek device there is, well…, a computer — a microprocessor. The microprocessor is therefore embedded inside the device. It is a child of the “Embedded Product” industry.

In fact, every child in grade school today learns that a PC is a “computer” whose brain is a “microprocessor” which runs “software” on an “operating system. The human interacts with it through a “GUI” (pronounced “Gooey”) or Graphical User Interface. But do they, or do you, for that matter, question what is going on behind that now-familiar GUI, inside that cute ladybug cell phone? As my three year old son used to say, “How s this thing work?” Does it contain an operating system or a microprocessor or software? “Survey says…YES!”

In fact, a variant of the “find the hidden Mickey” game can be played all day long. I challenge you to take a few moments and make a list of the number of things that you think have a “hidden” microprocessor inside. Are you done? You forgot to write down your microwave oven, didn t you? Sorry, but you also forgot to list your television!

Embedded products, clearly, are everywhere. A fascinating group of engineers and product managers around the world collaborate to design, build and market these high technology products that our society demands, building on the shoulders of those that have come before them. No longer do we find devices with needles, gauges and switches. The intelligence of the microprocessors used in embedded products has eliminated most all of these clunky physical components and have replaced them, instead, with the familiar electronic display. Elegant embedded GUIs, such as one might find on an Apple iPhone or the dashboard of a new Mercedes, warmly reach out to us every day, begging for us to touch them or, at the very least, to just admire them.

So, the very next time that you find yourself flying down the highway in your car, listening to your “tunes,” looking at your dashboard graphical interface, with all its virtual meters and needles, answering your cell phone and telling the kids to turn down their DVD, please take a minute to think about the fact that your car alone has many more microprocessors than does the Space Shuttle. I think you ll then agree with me that there is plenty of work yet left for our children to do!

Joseph Callaghan has over 25 years of experience in the Embedded Design and Product Development Industry.

Watch Free Live Video Of All Sports On Your Computer

There are many ways in which you can watch free live sport on your computer. Including sports such as the NBA, NFL, Boxing pay per views, cricket matches, soccer matches and all other types of sports. As a sports lover I have done a lot of research on the topic and the following points will save you a lot of time and should allow you to watch your favorite sports free on your computer.

How To Watch Live Sport Free:

1. Soccer such as the English Premier League and Champions League. These games are broadcasted live from numerous blogs across the internet. A simple search in Google will show you the numerous sites which will allow you to watch it.

2. Boxing pay per views. Both normal boxing and pay per view boxing can be watched on sopcast. First check the numerous boxing forums and they should give you a specific sopcast channel. Simply enter that channel in the player and you should be able to watch the boxing event live. The quality usually is not that good with this player.

3. NBA. The official NBA website offers free live video to be watched. All you have to do is sign up and give them your email and you can watch all your favourite games live. Audio commentary is also available.

4. Cricket. Similar to boxing there are numerous sopcast channels for each cricket game, especially games featuring India and Australia. Unlike the boxing channels, the cricket channels are usually of a high quality and the game can be watched and enjoyed similar to a normal television.

Broadcasting of live sports on the internet is very important especially for those business people who travel the world and have no option to watch the sports they are interested in on television in there area.

What is Nanotechnology?

The idea behind Nanotechnology is that by manipulating atoms and/or molecules to build materials and structures directly, as well as by exploiting the unique properties of matter at the nanoscale (0.1 nm to 100 nm) then we are at a distinctive level where the name of Nanotechnology has been put forward to describe this kind of human engineering activity.

Obviously, here we are dealing with what we call nanostructures - a nanometre is one thousand million times smaller than a metre, about 3 - 4 atoms in width. To give you an example how small this scale is, well just imagine we blew up an orange to the size of the earth, the atoms of the orange would become visible, and the size of each atom would be about the size of a single cherry.

Another definition I came across several times concerning Nanotechnology is that - it is the result of a marriage between chemistry and engineering. It has been likened to traditional chemistry but without chemical reactions. Here we can envisage building things one atom or molecule at a time, using programmed nanoscopic robotic arms or equivalent methods. The question therefore arises …. is it possible to move one atom (or one molecule) from one location and relocate it to the desired place without difficulty - simply using the present available technology?

The answer is “yes, but with difficulty”. At the same time, this process is limited at the present time. So transferring large numbers of atoms/molecules in a much faster way and on industrial scale is not yet possible - at least not with today s technology.

Therefore, to understand the above process using more sophisticated technology, we may say that by treating atoms or molecules discretely in a way similar to the process of computers treating bits of information, it may become possible to build from the bottom up anything we desire - at very little cost.

This is of course is the theory. The practical task of how to apply it, to make nanoscale-based technology as common as any technical or engineering method used today for various products, is still largely in the realm of the future. But suppose we could apply this technology today! Then this could mean an automatic construction of consumer goods without traditional human labour, as we know it. Any number of copies could be produced at a very small cost. This is where self-assembly come into the picture.

A good example of self-assembly is what is taking place in nature itself around us, i.e., molecules in a vegetable cell manipulating the atoms of soil, air and water in order to produce more copies for the growth to continue.

Manufacturing, using the principles of Nanotechnology, is expected to undergo profound changes, in the not too distant future. Advances in miniaturization will reach the level of individual atoms, and it may become possible to design and build products to atomically precise specifications.

In the USA, the U.S. Department of Defence, the National Science Foundation and NASA have extensively funded research related to Nanotechnology. Though Nanotechnology is still largely within the domain of the research laboratory, such government funding for various researches in this field will pay off eventually and handsomely in various ways, sooner or later.

Choosing a Paper Planner

With the growing popularity of laptops, tablet PCs, and PDA s, more and more people are adopting some form of electronic calendar system. A large number people, however, prefer the familiarity of a paper planner - and who could blame them? Although electronic calendars offer many benefits in terms of efficiency, they don t provide the satisfaction derived from putting pen to paper, the joy of reminiscing while reviewing the past year s events and accomplishments. Or the thrill of a blank new calendar along with the anticipation of what will be written in it over the coming months.

Deciding to stick with a paper planner (or switch back to one) is really only the starting point. Before you go out and buy a planner for next year, there are several factors you should consider to make sure that your investment will meet your needs.

Format

Do you like a loose leaf binder which allows you to add and remove page pages as needed, or do you prefer stitched or wire binding? Do you want a good quality product for which you can buy refills each year, or would you prefer to try something different every year?

Would you like to be able to close your planner with a zipper or snap, or would do you like to be able to just pop it open? Would a carrying handle be useful to you?

There are a wide variety of binders and planner covers available in leather, vinyl, and cloth, in a multitude of colours and styles.

Views and Layout

How much detail do you like to record? Do you need a full page per day for appointments with an additional page for tasks and notes? Or will a single page per day suffice?

Perhaps a week at a glance will be enough for you, but would you prefer a vertical layout, with the days of the week across the top and a column for each day, or the more common layout, with Monday to Wednesday on the left and Thursday to Sunday on the right?

Would you like to see your schedule in hourly, 30 minute, or 15 minute time slots?

A monthly view is a good way to get an overall view of your schedule, whether it s in addition to your weekly or monthly view, or if you re a big picture person who can get by with this layout alone.

Tasks

Do you work best with a weekly to do list on the same page as your schedule, or with a separate master list from which you can select tasks for each day or week? Or do you prefer to write each task on its own sticky note that you can throw out once it s completed?

Size

Do you want something that will fit in your pocket? Your purse? Your briefcase?

Most planners include a calendar and address book, and many have additional sections such as expenses, medical information, goals, projects, books to read, and so on. If this is important to you, you will want to be sure that the product you choose includes the sections you need, or offers the ability to customize it. If you will not make use of these sections, they will just add unnecessary bulk to your planner.

Tools

Many planners are set up to hold a pen, ruler, hole punch, stamps, and other accessories. Again, you should consider whether these will allow you to use your planner more efficiently, or if it will just be more for you to carry.

Your answers to the above questions will depend on a number of factors, including your lifestyle as well as your personality. Fortunately, there are a multitude of products on the market today, so you don t have to adapt to your planner, but instead you can select one that best meets your needs.

How To Save Time Online

One of the biggest problems anyone faces online involves too much to do and not enough time to get it done! I m not talking about the casual Internet user who jumps online as a form of entertainment to check email, use Skype, or watch YouTube videos. I m referring to the ever-growing number of people who use the Internet for much of their business activities. If you fall into that category, the following tips will easily help you save considerable time online.

Filter Email - Filtering email rates #1 on your time-saving list. In virtually every survey ever done on the subject, email wins hands-down as the #1 most time-consuming activity. To save time, you should separate your personal and business email with separate accounts and check the personal account once a day (saves 10 minutes per day). You should also use a commercial spam filter such as Spamarrest.com to cut down on the spam you must wade through to find messages that do need your attention (saves 15 to 30 minutes per day).

Password Organizers - Using a password manager like Roboform.com or KeePass.info (free) cuts down on time spent searching your desk or email program looking for usernames and passwords for accounts you don t use very often. Secure and immediate access to all your passwords will save you at least 10 to 15 minutes per day.

Unsubscribe - Get off the lists of publications you either don t read or don t get maximum value for time spent. Casual skimming of even one email newsletter or ezine eats up several minutes of your day each time you do it. Drop off 3 email lists and you ll save yourself at least 15 minutes per day.

Track Your Time - Flitting from task to task like a rabbit with ADD robs you of any real chance to get things done. Increase your focus on specific tasks by using an egg timer to get yourself 100% focused for a specific chunk of time. Google the phrase “free egg timer software” to find a timer that runs on your desktop. While the egg timer ticks, nothing else but the current task at hand matters. This technique will net you at least 30 extra minutes of wasted time saved each day.

Pen and Paper - Always operate with a list of prioritized tasks so you know what you should work on at any given moment. A simple, prioritized list on a piece of “real” paper will reclaim at least 10 minutes per day in wasted time.

Just Say “No” - Distractions abound on the Internet. New products, new services, new videos, new jokes, new distractions come at us on a minute-by-minute basis. Yet those distractions rob us of the precious time we desperately need to accomplish our own objectives. If something new comes along, let it sit for a day, or even just an hour, and then make a decision whether or not to give it your time. This will easily save you at least 15 to 20 minutes a day in lost time.

My best advice involves operating with a strong purpose when doing anything online. I ve shown you simple strategies here to save massive amounts of time every day. If you operate with a strong purpose, you ll save even more. Why? Because a strong purpose helps you filter out any time-wasting activities that won t get you where you want to go.

Most of us love new toys. In the adult world, that means new gadgets.

Yet, truthfully, we spend a lot of time and money on new computers, cell phones and software when our old tools will do the job just fine. A recent survey actually showed that almost $50 billion worth of older, unused gadgets are actually lying around our houses gathering dust.

That s not to say don t upgrade when you need to. But it s always prudent to step back, think about your business needs and make sure you can justify your decision to your boss — you — in a way that makes sense to the bottom line.

Think about it: will having that low lease payment for that laptop you just had to have feel just as great two years down the road?

Here s some additional compelling research. Figures from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) indicate that consumer electronics (CE) products (what we often refer to as “gadgets”) are more prevalent than ever.

According to the CEA, the average US household contains 26 CE products (up from 25 in 2005) and spent $1,200 buying them over the past 12 months. The top five growth sectors were MP3 players, digital cameras, car video entertainment systems, in-dash CD players and notebook PCs.

In the age of fast, fashion and cool, we re all victims. But when it comes to your business, you need to think twice, especially about the bottom line.

Ask yourself these questions to keep yourself in check when the new version of your favorite cellphone/ iPod /laptop comes out next week. (Note to reader: we re not criticizing, we have to ask ourselves these questions too).

1. Do you need the new features? Think long and hard about whether or not the new feature on your gadget of choice is going to benefit your business. Is it going to give you a different and better output? Is the speed so much faster that it is going to save you time at work? Or (gasp) is it simply the more fashionable model? Be honest.

2. Can you wait just a bit longer? If you simply must have the new XYZ, then think about waiting just a few months longer. Why buy the iPhone now when we know the capacity and battery life are going to improve in six months? Not to mention the price. A gadget s fashionable shelf life is short, so think of things in the long term that will still be usable and enjoyable six months or even years later.

3. Is there an alternative? Think about how much you are really willing to spend. Smart phones, for example, are pricey when compared to getting a phone upgrade from your cell phone service provider. And with a free upgrade every 12-18 months, you can easily stay current on the latest styles and features.

Take a moment, take a breath and really consider if you need it. Maybe you do. Or maybe it s just the next gizmo - that can wait.

New Computer Filters Offer Simple, Inexpensive Dust Protection

Computer filters offer dust and dirt protection for your PC. A common fear is that adding a computer filter to the air inlet port near the power supply fan may do little to block dust and dirt from entering the computer unit. New pcs have numerous internal fans and it is often not easy to figure out where air is supposed to enter the main unit and where air is intended to be exhausted. Some fans are used just to circulate internal air as well. A simple computer filter on the back of a PC is not going to work for the long term.

A better computer filter solution is one that is relatively new on the market. It is essentially a breathable filter bag that covers all inlet and outlet ports of a computer unit but still allows the computer to be cooled properly. New dust bag style computer filters protect the entire unit from dust, dirt, and other airborne contaminants. They are designed in sizes to fit virtually any computer tower and can be installed in minutes. They work well for monitors and printers as well, both of which need clean filtered air to assure proper long-term operation.

Computer filters used on computer enclosures also do a poor job protecting your computer from dust and dirt in the long term. One reason is because most computer cabinets require you to open the cabinet to operate the computer, for instance to access the CDROM or floppy drive. These operational requirements allow dust to bypass the cabinet dust filter and traps dust within the cabinet which eventually will be pulled inside the PC and settle there. This is completely preventable with a dust bag filter.

It is very important to use computer filters with PCs used in industrial or workshop situations where dust and dirt can very rapidly reduce the reliability and lifespan of the computer. Critical computer components exposed to dust and dirt, particularly the mechanical components like the keyboard and CD-ROM, can cease to operate without warning, and many times cannot be repaired once damaged by these contaminants. Studies have shown that dust can fill an unprotected computer in a matter of days, causing it to overheat. And metal dust can cause circuits to short-out, introducing a new workshop hazard. Dust bag style computer filters can do a lot to minimize these issues.

A problem with traditional computer filters is that they are designed to capture dust without impacting the amount of air that can enter the computer for cooling. This requires them to be fairly porous with the filter designed to capture the larger dust particles and allowing smaller dust particles and other airborne particles to pass through. The small surface area of the standard filter means that the air-flow must be relatively high, and dust and dirt collecting in the filter material quickly begins to restrict air flow. This problem is ameliorated by the larger dust bag, where the huge surface area of the filter translates into lower air-flow speed and a larger area to spread the dust trying to enter the computer. The lower air-flow speed also ensures less dust makes it through the filter material, especially smaller dust particles and airborne mists.
A small investment in a dust filter can offer a level of insurance that your computer equipment will operate when you need it to, and not wear out before its time.
Dust bag style computer filters are especially effective, easy to install and inexpensive.

Computer Dust Solutions strives to provide the best computer filters and covers to protect your computer equipment in harsh, dusty conditions.

College Computer Considerations

So you ve graduated from secondary school and have just been accepted to college. Although going to college is still just studying, it s a more intense kind of studying as opposed to high school. This is because you are now going to try to get a degree in a chosen field of study such as law, medicine, fine arts, etc. That means you will be doing a lot of research and writing a lot of papers. You will need a computer to help you in this task.

Do you need a desktop or laptop (or notebook in some cases)? While desktops are a lot cheaper and can store a lot of items, the best device for a college student who has to go from class to class usually from one building to another would be a laptop. It is lightweight and easy to carry around. You can also use it for the internet anywhere there is a service available. But if you re careless and are prone to losing things, stick with the desktop.

What should a newbie like you look for in a computer? Here are some things you should take into consideration before committing to one:

PC or MAC? That is one of the first things you should ask yourself. Which one is better? Both have their good points. Mac is usually more expensive but this will not be for long as Apple gears up on becoming more competitive when it comes to pricing. Also, more software are being developed that can be used for both platforms. The rule of thumb in solving this issue is to go with you will be majoring in. A student whose major has anything to do multimedia and the arts should consider getting a Mac because this is what most professions in that industry are using. For business, law, and science majors, PC would be more advisable because of the office tools needed available to this platform. If you still can t make up your mind, go with what s being used in your campus library and laboratories. This way, at least your system will be compatible with theirs.

Memory (RAM). A computer s random access memory or RAM will determine how fast your applications will load. In this case, the more the better. If you read the system requirements for any software that you want to install into your computer you will see there a minimum RAM requirement. Problem is with each improvement in software capabilities, the more RAM required. So the best way for you to ensure that your computer can take on all your needs for the nest 3 to 4 years is take the minimum RAM required in your software and multiply it by 8. That s how much RAM you conservatively need for you computer.

Hard Drive. This is where you store your files and software applications. You will be needing a lot of this if you plan to store large files. The higher you hard disk space, the better.

Although there are a lot of things to consider when buying a computer, these are the most important features to look out for.

Before you start making mistakes that could cost you the life of your precious computer, you had better learn how to take care of your new arrival. The things you do to your computer now will determine how long your computer will last without crashing.

Below are some tips you should know when using your computer:

Never EVER switch off your computer without waiting for Windows to shut it down. This may cause permanent hard drive defects caused by the hard drive heads contacting the surface of the disc drive and cause a host of Windows problems.

The only time you can force a shutdown is if your hard drive “hangs” or refuses to respond. In this case, try pressing ALT+CTRL+DEL keys at the same time and wait for task manager to launch. The Task Manager window will have a tab you can press to enable you to shutdown normally. If Task Manager fails to launch, then you can safely switch off your computer and switch it on again after about 3 minutes. Perform emergency shutdown only when absolutely necessary.

Plug your computer into a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). This will prevent power surges in cases of low and high voltage occurrences. A UPS will protect your computer from any type of power disaster.

Backup important files as soon as you can. Purchase a CD burner to store files (make at least 2 copies of the same files on CD). Don t wait until the next day if you can help it. A crash may occur any time.

Use Scandisk and Defragmenter at least once a month. Just like you need to have a check up once in a while to catch any disease that may be forming, your computer also needs to be checked up to keep it healthy and crash-free.

Do not unplug peripherals while they are powered up. Doing so may damage your motherboard.

Keep at least 100 MB of your C: free for Windows to use. Maxing out your drive may result in Windows dumping data to your hard drive, or your computer will run really, really slow.

Do not let a lot of programs load when starting up your computer. Uninstall or delete programs that start up as soon as you start up your computer.

Use an antivirus program. You really need one if you want your computer to keep running smoothly. Downloaded attachments from friends, installed programs downloaded from the net and a host of other ways could infect your computer. An antivirus program will make sure no “bad” stuff is allowed into the system.

Use a firewall if you have a high speed internet connection. A firewall will prevent your computer from getting “hijacked”. You may not be aware of it, but your computer may have been hacked at least once. Hackers use search programs to seek out computers at random. Get a firewall program and use it.

Do not throw away installer software once you ve installed the program. You will need to reformat your computer some time and all data on the drive will be erased and you will need to reinstall your software.
