Truth be told, there are new and emerging computer viruses coming out every day. By innocently opening that email you can catch a vicious infection that ravages your computer, wipes out files, and interferes with software. Many websites, downloads, and other innocent looking things on the internet can cause your computer to catch a virus that s why every computer should be equipped with up-to-date software that changes as new viruses emerge.
Viruses disguise themselves in programs, files, or documents, waiting to be let into your computer. Once there they can wreak havoc on your system by damaging files and the computer itself. It s able to duplicate to infect all areas of your computer and oftentimes spread via email or other transfer of infected files (like storing infected files on a CD or USB drive). Just like a real virus, computer viruses corrupt and multiply within a computer, doing it much damage and causing you much frustration. The sole purpose of creating a virus is to cause damage and trouble for other computer users. Viruses can damage programs, delete files, reformat the hard drive, resulting in data loss and system crashes.
Anti-virus protection is important for any computer user. Even if you re not storing sensitive data on your computer like a company computer would, you would still be at a loss if your information were to be damaged or loss. What s important to you should be protected, and getting an anti-virus software package is a vital first step. Anti-virus software works by scanning you hard drive and searching out viruses based on a dictionary of known viruses. It can also search for behavior common to viruses as a way to search. That s why it is so important to have updated protection. Since new viruses are created daily, any old software just won t cut it. After the viruses have been detected, the software springs into action to remove it from your computer.
It s recommended that you use paid anti-virus protection. There is free protection out there, but often times it doesn t come with enough technical support or updates to make it really effective against the threat. Also, some free software comes with spyware that s then used for advertising purposes. Some paid anti-virus software actually comes with anti-spyware and anti-adware built in, which is also good protection for your computer to have. In all cases, it s good to do some research before buying protection for you computer.
